Samways is a family run business with 50 years of experience in the fishing industry. Specialising in local West Country Fish sourced directly from fishermen and the local ports, we are committed to supplying port to plate in 24hours.
The company has come a long way since its humble beginnings and has always been a family run business, established in January, 1961 by Mr. Clifford Samways from a small wooden barrow, selling his catch on the harbour side of West Bay, Dorset.
50 years on Samways Fish Merchants has grown into a well respected local business with a multinational customer base, selling and purchasing over 2,500 tonnes per year. The company trades from a purpose built factory, has a great product range and a dedicated team providing an extremely efficient service, led by Mr. Clive Samways, Managing Director since 1985, pioneering Samways’ entry into the European market.
Key to the success of the export operation is Samways distribution fleet allowing competitive and timely delivery, ensuring every minute of precious shelf life is passed on to the customer. There is a strong relationship with our local restaurants who are looked after by the ever growing sales team and the Export department is in constant demand with customers across Europe.
Samways has a diverse customer base supplying export, retail, wholesale and the catering trade. The catering division is headed by Clive’s Wife, Sarah who joined the team in 1999. She has built up this side of the business which now has a client list of over 400 active customers.
With the weather dependant nature of the trade we are in contact with the local fishermen and ports across the south coast on a daily basis. They provide us with the forecasts, daily news and most importantly what is due to be landed each morning. With the information and communication between us, this ensures that our customers receive seasonal, local and the finest fresh fish landed across the coast.
